The etched patterns on the back of Luna's banjoleles are a tribute to traditional Hawaiian quilt design. The old legends say a breadfruit pattern (called ULU in Hawaiian) was the first truly Hawaiian Quilt design and today, this is the first design traditionally used when beginning the craft. Luna has chosen the ULU (breadfruit) and KALO (taro plant) as inspiration because both of these plants were sacred and an essential part of early hawaiian life.
